Intern and Grow with us
About Duckweed Labs
Duckweed Labs is a diverse, multi-institutional startup focused on sustainable space nutrition to support long-duration astronaut missions and, ultimately, communities on Earth facing food scarcity. Our flagship product, the Duckweed Protein Supplement Dispenser (DPSD), offers a renewable, efficient way to keep astronauts healthy, while reducing costly resupply missions. If you’re seeking a dynamic environment where you’ll solve puzzles nobody has tackled before, and where your ideas truly matter: you’re going to love Duckweed Labs.
Role Overview
As a Fluid Dynamics Engineer (Intern), you will be responsible for designing, modeling, and optimizing fluid flow within our hydroponic systems. You will use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools and sensor-based monitoring approaches to ensure efficient nutrient and oxygen distribution for plant growth in microgravity and controlled environments. Working closely with mechanical, software, and agricultural engineers, you’ll help develop a fully integrated system to sustain plant life in space.
Responsibilities
-
Fluid Flow Modeling & Simulation:
-
Build and refine CFD models (e.g., in ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL, or OpenFOAM) to predict and optimize flow in hydroponic systems.
-
Simulate fluid behavior in microgravity to ensure effective nutrient distribution and root zone aeration.
-
-
System Design & Implementation:
-
Create and test fluid delivery networks—pumps, valves, piping—to maintain uniform nutrient and oxygen distribution.
-
Integrate real-time monitoring sensors for flow rate, pressure, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient concentration.
-
-
CFD Validation:
-
Develop and validate models using experimental data from lab-scale prototypes.
-
Adjust designs based on insights from both simulations and on-the-ground testing.
-
-
Optimization & Control:
-
Enhance flow control mechanisms for space applications, focusing on efficiency, reliability, and minimal resource usage.
-
Incorporate automated control systems to manage fluid dynamics in real-time.
-
-
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
-
Work with mechanical, software, and agricultural engineers to ensure smooth integration of fluid systems within growth chambers.
-
Contribute to design reviews, troubleshooting sessions, and system-level testing.
-
Requirements
-
Citizenship: U.S. Citizen (required for ITAR compliance)
-
Education: Currently pursuing or holding a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
-
Time Zone: Able to work remotely from anywhere in the United States (Eastern Time Zone preferred)
-
Technical Skills & Experience:
-
Strong knowledge of fluid dynamics principles and sensor-based automation.
-
Experience with PCB design and circuit integration for monitoring systems.
-
Familiarity with power management strategies for remote or autonomous systems.
-
Proficiency with CFD software (ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL, OpenFOAM, etc.) preferred.
-
Experience in automated control systems for agriculture or environmental monitoring.
-
Ability to create manufacturing drawings (preferred).
-
Understanding of space-rated materials (preferred).
-
-
Soft Skills:
-
Strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities for complex fluid interactions.
-
Excellent teamwork skills, especially in multidisciplinary environments.
-
Effective communication to present technical findings and contribute to decision-making.
-
